Biography

Brad Phillips is a New York-based artist and writer whose practice moves between painting and writing, often exploring the unstable relationship between autobiography and fiction. His paintings range from photorealistic representations to works incorporating text and graphic imagery, while his writing encompasses fiction, essays, and criticism. Phillips has exhibited extensively in North America and Europe, with solo exhibitions at de boer, Los Angeles; Harper’s, New York and East Hampton; Anat Egbi, Los Angeles; Jonathan Hopson, Houston; James Fuentes Gallery, New York; Wallspace, New York; Groeflin Maag Galerie, Zurich; Rod Bianco Gallery, Oslo; and Andrew Kreps Gallery, New York, among others. His work has also been exhibited at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, Galerie de l’UQAM, the Henry Art Gallery, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art. His work has been reviewed and written about in Publications including Artforum, Frieze, Modern Painters, The Believer, The New York Times Magazine, Hyperallergic, Artnet, Artsy, and The Brooklyn Rail, among others.

 

Phillips’s work is held in public and private collections including the Glenbow Museum, Calgary, the Capital Group Collection, and the Royal Bank of Canada. He has received support from the Canada Council for the Arts, British Columbia Arts Council, and Toronto Arts Council, and received an MFA from OCAD University.

 

As a writer, Phillips has contributed fiction, essays, and criticism to The Paris Review, Granta, The Believer, Playboy, Artforum, ArtReview, Modern Painters, Vice, Purple, and other publications. His first book, Essays & Fictions, was published in 2019 by Tyrant Books.
