Press release

Nathalie Karg Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition featuring works by two prolific artists: Wayne Ngan and Tim Wilson. This exhibition will illuminate the parallels between these two exquisitely crafted bodies of work that both seem to bring notions of place and time to the forefront. The intimate juxtaposition of these oeuvres allows the viewer to be drawn in by their artistic mastery for a moment of contemplation.

Following a career spanning over 60 years, Ngan distinguished himself as a highly prolific and accomplished potter. Ngan’s vessels, which are deeply rooted in the great pottery traditions of the Far-East, are an embodiment of his environment and ideals. Having lived and worked on the remote Hornby Island in relative isolation until his recent passing in 2020, the values of simplicity and wholeness that he has achieved in his art, are simultaneously reflected in how he lived. Having spent three months in Japan in the late 1970s, Ngan witnessed how pottery distinctly grew out of its own region. The artist’s own output has evolved to return to a fundamental connection to the elements around him.

Tim Wilson is a painter whose works explore the expansive possibilities painting, often toeing the line between abstraction and representation. The modest scale and intricate details of this body of work encourages viewers to pause and reflect on the small pleasures of everyday life. Fusing the visual languages of 17th Century Dutch still life paintings and contemporary photography, Wilson’s works collapse notions of time.

Wayne Ngan
Wayne Ngan (1937-2020), born in Canton, China, was a studio potter based in Hornby Island, BC, Canada. Ngan channels the presence and spirit of Far-Eastern ceramics in his own sculptural creations. His work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions since the 1960s including The Apartment in Vancouver, Canada; Gardiner Museum in Toronto, Canada; American Crafts Museum in Concord, Massachusetts; Hanart Art Gallery in Taipei, Taiwan; Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in Canada; National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, Canada; and Nathalie Karg Gallery. Ngan’s ceramics form a part of the collections of various institutions such as the Gardiner Museum, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Canadian Museum of Civilization, and the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery.

Tim Wilson
Tim Wilson (b. 1970) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York and holds an MFA from Yale University School of Art and a BFA from The Virginia Commonwealth University. He has been awarded residencies at Offshore Residency, Sol LeWitt Studio, Shandaken Project and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
