Between Either and Or: TIM WILSON

Nathalie Karg Gallery is pleased to present Between Either and Or by New York-based artist Tim Wilson. For his first solo exhibition with the gallery, Wilson presents 18 paintings that examine notions of artifice and image. While embracing pre-modernist modes of painting, these works portray domestic interiors gleaned from television and film. This convergence of past and present creates recombinant forms as new fictions, that seek to alter the lens through which these histories are viewed.
About his work, Wilson writes:
“Watching a film, I always scan the outer edges for some sort of surprise. Often missing the narrative, I rarely suspend my disbelief. Nevertheless, when I seize upon an image, I pause to capture it. I harness it. I square the image and justify its frame. I correct its color to make complete what was a mere fleeting moment. I want to envision the objects of an unattainable desire, yet echoed back, is a spirit that remains elusive.
At odds with this impasse is the joy of seeing color set side by side—the shapes they make and worlds they reembody. Not merely an image, but the artifice itself. Light resting on the surface of things making them seem real and whole in the mind’s eye. A discrete object of reflection.”
Tim Wilson (b. 1970) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York and holds an MFA from Yale University School of Art and a BFA from The Virginia Commonwealth University. He has been awarded residencies at Offshore Residency, Sol LeWitt Studio, Shandaken Project and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Most recently, his work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Fahrenheit Madrid (Madrid, Spain), Alfred University (Alfred, NY) and Sardine (Brooklyn, NY) among others. He has been included in several group shows, including, The Flag Art Foundation (New York, NY), Jack Hanley Gallery (New York, NY), and Harper’s Books (East Hampton, NY).
