Biography

Nathlie Provosty (b. 1981, Cincinnati, Ohio) is a New York City based visual artist.

Her work engages and plays with materiality and perception. Close inspection of her pieces reveal unique and intricate complexities. In her manipulation of oil paint, she takes advantage of the ways a painting may interact with light and environment, often playing with matte and glossy finishes. Such skill allows for an almost reflective quality that helps draw the viewer into and across the works’ layers. Created with masterful artistic rigor and vision, Provosty’s paintings hover between illusion and abstraction and inspire elusive shifts between physical, spatial, and conceptual depth.

Her first one-person exhibition in New York opened in 2012 at 1:1, an experimental artist-run gallery in the East Village. She has since exhibited nationally and internationally including most recently at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Milan, Italy (2023), Nathalie Karg Gallery in New York (2022) and A Palazzo Gallery, Italy (2020), among others. Group exhibitions include Gagosian Gallery, London, UK (2023), Apalazzo Gallery, Italy (2021), the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (2020); SFMoMA (2019); Kunsthall Stavanger, Norway (2018); Colby Museum of Art, ME, curated by Alex Katz (2017); Washington University Museum, DC (2017); and the American Academy of Arts and Letters as part of the Art and Purchase Awards exhibition (2020).
