Nathalie Karg is pleased to present Field Paintings, an exhibition by Los Angeles based artist Jennifer Guidi. This will be the artist’s first solo presentation in New York.
The series marks Guidi’s foray into abstraction: a departure from her earlier representational work. In what she describes as “a natural evolution of an emptying out of ideas and noise from her paintings”, the artist pares her practice down to a simple mark to create her ‘fields’. Using both oil and sand as her media, she explores the nuances of surface, line, color and mark making.
In her oil paintings, Guidi emphasizes the organic emergence of an ethereal and meditative space, resulting in an unexpected lightness from her traditional painting materials. In contrast to the paintings, Guidi’s sand works offer a dense materiality despite a multitude of marks within their surfaces which allude to motion and natural evolution. Guidi embraces gradual accumulation and spontaneous mark making, creating atmospheric surfaces that transcend the physical border of the paintings.
Jennifer Guidi lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has a concurrent show of Field Paintings at LAXART in Los Angeles.
